Day 3 of the heat. Today isn't supposed to be as bad as the last two or three days. l think yesterday was supposed to be the worst of it. We're going to chill out here today until l have to go to work. You know it is hot when Sierra opts to sleep on the hardwood floors.

The girls and l played the Pirates of the Caribbean version of Life last night. We had fun. lt was too hot to do anything useful, like go to sleep, so we did what we'd have had to do if Zach had been around...play boardgames. In the words of Madison, "boardgames are right for just about any occasion!" Mitch and l happen to agree! (We stayed up all night playing Life with Madison.)

So like l said, l've been checking out pics of things to do in Rhode Island...l can tell Block Island will be a hit with my fam.

I slept pretty good in the 6 hours that l slept. l woke up around 6 AM. lt is still so hot, the heat never really let up last night and it is very very muggy this morning. Kind of fitting that l am reading a book about living in the Congo.

l've got my pre-latte coffee brewing. l will have to jump in the shower soon. It is almost 8.

Work was much better today. l wish every day at work could be like today. Jamie and l went back to her house today for lunch. We had leftover BBQ chicken and potato salad...it was yummy. Debbi came into work today, so l was so happy to see her. l was worried about her and the boys. We had a nice talk today and her spirits are up.

l got a lot done on super grant today. Put in some lovely graphs and graphic organizers...pretty pretty. My boss was kinda impressed. I can sleep in a bit tomorrow and chill out here until it is time to go to work. l will probably try to sit in the sun.

Other than that, l am just trying to stay out of the heat. Looking for jobs. I checked out all the beaches in Rhode Island...we're gonna love living there!

June 26, 2007

This morning was rough. I was supposed to work downstate all day, but I was still struggling with yesterday's news and hadn't slept well, so instead l just worked at the center all day. Things got better as the day progressed and the kids did a fine job of cheering me up, as usual. We talked some more about me leaving in August. Most of the kids that l am very close with are leaving around that time too. There are some new ones, though, and it is so hard not to bond with them!

Anyway, the paper left out alot of details that l inadvertently told all of you! OOPS!! l had an inside scoop.

I wrote in my journal a lot today. 5 pages of notes! A ton of stress to work out, l guess!

God is great. Prayer requests are in.

I get to work all day at the office tomorrow. Things weren't going so well for one of our employees today to hear them tell of it. l am not at liberty to say, and since few of you know these people anyway, l am just writing vaguely about it. l write simply as to create a backdrop of the atmosphere in which l work. BUT l do get to work on big grant tomorrow. Friday too!!! That sweetness is certainly my weakness.

l think l am going to bed on time tonight. l need to catch up on some sleep. This has been a long week already and it is only Tuesday. l wonder what tomorrow will bring. l stayed up late last night, sending off resumes, etc. l will land a good job, even if it is only temporary, until l begin teaching at the school of my dreams.

l miss my boyfriend. He is doing sports camps this week. :(
But we get so spend all next week together for our vacation. And we'll be together in Boston on the 4th.

l can't believe l have this much to still be writing about. Especially considering all of the writing l did already today. Craziness! The Poisonwood Bible is fantastic. A definite recommendation from me. l think l will take my doggie down to the river tonight. There is going to be a concert in the park. Tuesdays nights are Concert in the park nights in Orono and Wednesday nights are Concert in the park nights in Old Town, as part of the annual summer concert series. Grab some lawn chairs, a blanket, some wine and cheese, a dog and a book, and some company, and that is what l call a perfect summer evening.

Crappy Monday

It was a crappy Monday all around. I got some work done on an important grant and was awaiting lunch when my friend Debbi got a phone call from her son...they had been looking for her former foster son, who is now 19 and not living with them anymore...anyway, they found him. He had hung himself in a tree and her son was the one who found his body. Anyway, l am sure it'll be in the papers tomorrow. He was a good kid, with some problems, and he would come with his mom (Debbi) to help out at the center once in awhile. I called my girls to let them know, since they are friends with Debbi's boys and we're all still in a little bit of shock.

I'm hoping the rest of the week goes by fast. I can't wait to be in Boston next week. l have to work in Belfast tomorrow. Mary Ann and Carl have both been teasing me about counting my days until my last day at work. I can't help it, l am excited. Mary Ann says she can't blame me. We just wish we had become better friends sooner.

The only good news about today is that it is over!

l started a new book. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A fictitious account of a missionary wife and 4 daughters in the Congo. The political and historical aspects of the book are non-fiction. She is a very poetic author and after l was reading a bit about her, discovered she has written quite a bit of poetry. Upon further research, also discovered she's been a party to Oprah's book club...ugh! l will not let that discourage me. Apparently Oprah has read a number of my favorite books...and now calls them her own...nothing against the big O. I am just not so sure l like reading books with a big Oprah's Book Club sticker on it...l guess for most people, that sticker actually encourages them to read it, while for me, it entices me to put it back on the shelf! This is where Brian would tell me that l am a literary snob. We all have crosses to bare.

I finally finished The Half-Blood Prince. Kinda slow during the first chapter and l could not put it down from about mid-way through until the end. lt took me about a week to get into the first half and one NIGHT to read the second!!! l was even dreaming about it. Now l can't wait for the next and final book. The kids had already read it when it first came out and we have it on CD, so l knew the basics, like who dies, etc, but it was nice to read it cover to cover. She is an amazing writer. People can say what they want, but l have and will always maintain, that this woman is brilliant, not because of her subject matter, or her literary skill, but because of the fact that she got an entire world of children (and adults) reading!!! Who stands in lines at bookstores at midnight waiting for a new book? EVERYONE now!!! My kids and l did when book 4 came out. We got there at 9 PM and stayed until midnight. The kids played games and had snacks. History in the making. Something they can tell their grandkids about. Something l can tell MY grandkids about!

June 24, 2007

It is Sunday morning. This has been a long week, only made shorter because Mitch was able to be here for all of it. Some of us went out for a few drinks Friday night. Saturday night, we hung out at Dave and Karen's. We got there a bit early so Dave and Mitch could catch up, and then they were going drinking. I had a chance to hang out with my girls, Bailey and Madison for the night. We played DDR and Life, made brownies, and watched Hannah Montana. Thursday we went out to visit Mitch's mother and grandmother and then Friday we met them for lunch at Governor's while I was on my lunch break. The rest of the time, we just hung out and watched movies and played with the dog.

I have to spend today catching things up. All of this week will be spent packing for out 4th of July trip to Boston. I need to make lists and make sure everyone knows who is riding with whom and we'll have to coordinate watches, etc. It is so easy to get nickeled and dimed in Boston ($4/bottle of water times 4 of us that I am paying for) and we all want to be able to spend what we want in Old Orchard, so the actual day in Boston takes a bit of planning. We'll fill a big cooler with bottled water and assorted drinks. I'll pack some strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, maybe some watermelon and cantalope, some bananas...it is important to stay hydrated because you're always up at least 48 hours, usually more than that, and fruit is a less boring way to do that than just water. We'll have some cheese and crackers to snack on and chips and dip. I'll pack stuff to make sandwiches and we'll have our usual "meal" at Cheers. The key is to pack only enough to keep everyone full, but so that it is all gone for when we have to carry it out at the end of the night. We're bringing the tent this year, so maybe just maybe, I'll actually be able to catch a nap or two. That would be a first!

Tomorrow will be a long day in the office. Tuesday will be a long day in Belfast. Thursday I have to pay bills. Next weekend pack and get the house in order. Sierra will be staying with Desaraye and David. That makes me so happy. I was not looking forward to boarding her because, while they are great and wonderful people, I was worried that Sierra would think I was bringing her back to the shelter. There would be NO WAY l could enjoy myself if l was worried about my baby. Sierra loves Tajin and will do just fine with all the spoiling that will happen. He's 5 and loves to take her for a "walk" around the house on her leash! She is just such a love bug, she wouldn't do well being kenneled.

June 19, 2007

I caught up with some things around here at the house. Shannon and Kayla went to work with me tonight. Now I am home and waiting for my man to come home. He won't be here until I am already in bed, but that is okay. I just have to get thru next week and then we'll be in Boston and Old Orchard Beach for the 4th! Next week I can start obsessively looking at the extended forecast to see what the weather will be like.

At least I slept better last night than the night before. I got about 6 hours or so in. Stilling missing my usual 8, but things are stressful, even if they are a happy stressful. I think I will feel better once I start getting things packed up. Seems like people spend an awful lot of their lives just waiting.

I half-expect Zach to run into the house with Dakota at any moment. They had a sad last night together the night before Zach left for Virginia. I let him spend the night at Dakota's because he won't be coming back to Maine until probably sometime in September. It was sad because they've been the best for friends for 5 years or so...but I guess I'd rather him blame losing a friend on the move than for him and Dakota to grow apart naturally, like often happens once the kids reach high school. Maybe that would never have happened, who knows, but it does happen. It isn't like we won't be back to visit often, and Zach is more than welcome to spend as much time at Dakota's as he wants, but it won't be the same as just living a few houses over from one another. For Kayla and Hayley, it will be a bit different since their dad still lives in Old Town. They will be back every other weekend or so to see him and Kayla's best friend lives right next door to him. Plus I think it is easier for girls to maintain long-distant relationships with each other than boys. Zach makes friends so easy, though, so I think he'll be just fine. He's more excited about the fact that he'll only be a 4 hour drive away from his dad, providing his dad drives the other 4 hours.

Anyway, nothing else really exciting going on.

Monday Night

I am just getting home from work. I've checked my mail, gone to the grocery store, done a load of laundry and mopped the bathroom floor. Now I am going to blog for a bit. Zach just called. It was good to hear his voice. I am going to start packing up his bedroom this weekend.

I saw my friend Jade this morning, after Jamie and I were coming back from lunch at Bagel Central. I got the yummy homemade creamy tomato soup again. I think I've finally nailed the recipe down. l'm gonna try to make it this weekend.

Work was a bit long today, but relatively uneventful. Mitch will be here a day early. This distance thing is really killing us, but like he reminded me, only 62 more days left and 30 of those, we'll be together anyway.

I can't believe it is 6 PM already. I slept horribly last night. Probably only 4 hours total. Kayla spent the day at the beach with Shannon and Hayley is with my brother for the week. Just me and my dog and some Twisted Tea. I really have to get the laundry done.

June 17, 2007

I am currently eating a raspberry oat muffin. I'm not a muffin eater, as a rule, but the red splotches of color inticed me this morning, while getting my latte.

My blog posts have been pretty dang boring lately. Not that they weren't always kind of bland, but they've reached a new level. Still, I am amazed at how many people google my name. Well, you know, I AM a superstar!

I guess being in love has taken some of the creative force out of me. I don't think it is the love part as much as it is the "we're-spending-every-available-moment-together-or-on-the-phone-or-on-the-computer" part. Without the Brian drama, my posts are certainly a bit lackluster. That is ok, though.

So I will try to remedy this plight of the boring blog. Or read other's blogs for inspiration. Or maybe I'll try to win the Kevin Bacon game.

*Oh, big news, btw, that I forgot to mention*
So I was in the lab, printing some stuff off, and Jim was like, I have big news...mind you, the last time Jim had big news for me, it was to tell me he was getting married...He had resigned the day before. No more college professing. He got a job at a corporation and is moving to Georgia. Threw me for a loop for a bit, but I truly and sincerely am happy for him. He'll still teach some online courses next fall, but after that, he is done. And no Middle Level Institute this summer, either. His final moments of advice for me? If Brian calls again, hang up on him. Mitch liked that advice! :)

I think I am going to clean, now that the sun is going in. We're supposed to get some severe, SEVERE thunderstorms. I like!!!

I was going to blog about bras today, but looked like Erin already did! Speaking of which, I found one, Erin, that will fit under the dress...it is a convertible one, with clear straps, that you can make into a halter, and there is a clear thin tab between both cups, so nobody should see it. Anyway, Erin's house is a bra-hater! My strap broke there while trying on my bridesmaid dress.

Happy Father's Day

The beach was fun yesterday. Lexi had a good time. She protected me from the bad turtles. After that, i came home and took a shower and then Kayla, Shannon and I hung out at the mall. We dropped Shannon off, Kayla went to bed and I talked on the phone with Mitch until about 11.

Not much shakin' today. More laying in the sun. Lattes in 11 minutes. Finishing Son of a Witch, by Gregory Maguire. I need some new clothes for the 4th. I think we're renting a car this year. Two weeks to go. I'm excited.

Open Water 3

That is what I am calling the day at the beach. Shannon blames me mostly, since it was me that asked, "Wanna go in?" We swam to the dock and were laying in the sun, relaxing, when Shannon put her feet in the water...all of a sudden she shrieks, "What's that? Is that a turtle?" Oh yes. it WAS a turtle...a ginormous snapping turtle, about 2 feet long!!! We scream for Hayley and her boyfriend Johnathon, both of whom are on the beach, and Hayley yells, "You're on your own!" Johnathon at least attempts to help, by wading out there. He sees the turtle, confirms that yes, indeed, that is the biggest snapping turtle, and heads back to shore!

Things get worse! Two very drunk guys, operating a speed boat circle the dock and ask if "you ladies want a ride?" We would rather face the giant snapping turtle. The guy persisted for our numbers, but I assured him my boyfriend would not be happy if I gave anyone my number. Finally, loser boys drove off, and Mr. Snapper gave up waiting for a toe snack, and Shannon and I practically ran on water back to shore. The whole debacle took about an hour.

Yesterday, Mitch and I took Zach to the airport and saw him off. He was randomly selected for the secondary security search...lucky him. I am not sure why the guy needed rubber gloves. They just pulled him off to the side and waved the wand around him.

After, Mitch and I hung out in the Old Port, and made out on Eastern Promenade...and drove home on Rt 1 (the coastal highway) instead of taking I-95. We stopped in Camden to make out on top of Mt. Battie and then stopped in Belfast for an ice cream at Scoops and so we could write 'Mitch loves Jenn' on the slate chalk board wall. A summer ritual. By August, that wall will be just covered with summer people's names.

Oh yeah, we saw a bicyclist get run down by a car in the Old Port. Had to wait a bit in traffic for that to clear up.

Anyway, beach tomorrow, with Kayla, Hayley and my niece Lexi. Probably the beach the next day, too.

Zach fixed my shift key!!! Yay!

I visited with my other Grandmother tonight. I've missed her. It's been a few weeks since I've been over and I'm used to being there at least once a week. I'm taking her to run some errands tomorrow morning. I also have to call Carl early because Jamie and I left the coffee pot on and she's worried about burning down the city.

Mitch will be here back where he belongs in 41 hours! This is the longest we've been apart and it is killing us.

Not much else going on. I worked today and got my vacations all set. I'm taking off the 5th thru the 12th of July...no since including the 4th since I get it off anyway. And then I am taking the 23rd thru the 27th of July off. My last day of work is August 17th. I'll have the rest of August off to move to Rhode Island and get settled before I start work again in September. Teaching in Rhode Island...who would have thought it? :) I'm excited.

We're having yummy Shepard's Pie tonight. Hayley cooked it for us. Kayla peeled and cooked the potatoes. I love that all my kids know how to cook and that they enjoy helping with suppers. We all have our own specialties so things are always good.

Conversations from the Car: (haven't done one of those for awhile!)
Me: Hey Zach, did you notice that the house that used to be there burned down?
Zach: No, what happened?
Me: Ummmm, it burned down.
Kayla: (laughing) The brains in this car are amazing.

June 7, 2007

I can't believe it is June. 1/2 a year gone by already! I've been sitting in the sun for most of the day today. I'll wait for the girls to get home from school and then I'll head to work. I have meetings next week. Super fun.

I got my hair cut last night. Not sure if I blogged about that yesterday or not. 2 inches off. It looks good and healthy again, even though I really loved it long. It is just hard on my ends when it is that length and I hate obsessing over split ends. My favorite girl cut it last night. Jill (the other girl) is nice too, but she always takes off way more than I want. They are both going to Laconia for Bike Week and they knew that Brian and I had been, so they were asking me all about it. I can't wait to hear their stories when they get back. I had some funny ones that will last me a lifetime and I am sure the same will happen for them!

Okay, gotta go get back in the sun!

Another long day at work. I got a lot of work done today. The packet that was supposed to be mailed out today actually got mailed out today. I woke up this morning to no internet again, so the day started out on a wrong note, but I got everything done and I'm back online...Thank you Jim! :)

Today was such a long day at work! I'm glad it is behind me. Lots of paperwork. Don't want to think about it, don't want to blog about it!

In better news, Zach is loving his motorcycle. He is so cute on it! 10 more days with my baby.

I'm looking forward to Friday night. Going out with some friends. Saturday and Sunday, I'll be taking the kids to Jenkin's Beach. That should be fun.

We're having spaghetti and garlic bread tonight for supper. Zach and I are watching War of the Worlds. I'm trying to unwind from my day. It would have been way too easy just to crawl into bed right now. I am trying to keep a semblance of regularity to my schedule...which means no bed until at least 9 PM...okay, maybe 8:30.

I want to finish my book tonight. Jamie and I have a busy day at work tomorrow.

I hope everyone is having a good Monday.

Ahhhhh...Pocket Bike!

That is what Zachary has. A pocket bike. 2-stroke engine. 40 mph. I was checking out some dirtbikes, too. Maybe next year. Like I said, he's having a ball on this one right now.

I think I just broke my shift key. I took it off because it was not working right and sometimes dust and stuff gets behind the keys. Now I can't figure out how to get the dang thing back on! Okay, I may have fixed it. Now it is really working. Better than the rest of the keys! ;) Figures!!!

I have 11 days left with Zach. Another long summer without him.

But the girls and Mitch and I are excited about the 4th in Boston! That is coming right up!

Yay!!!

I fixed my internet connection!!! I am not sure what I did to fix it, as I was just messing around. But YAY!!!!

I have pictures of Zach on his new 'motorcycle'! He loves it. It looks like a full-size bike, just in miniature. Not a dirt-bike. Not a runt bike. Not so sure what to call it. I'll post pics later. He's having a ball. Mitch fixed it so it runs great. He's been up since Wednesday. He just left today. :(

I'm not really feeling much like blogging right this second, so I will update more thoroughly later!
