If you notice the people to the right of the photo, that should give you a reference of high tall the walls are and the waves were already breaching the wall.

These rock walls are about 5 feet high and the waves were already breaching them a day before the storm.

Loud Wind

This was the same area as the two houses in the photos...about five minutes later this road was washed out. We got out of there in the nick of time!

The water would end up covering the beach, parking lot, and over the road during high tide at 8 PM on this day. This was about 3 hours before the devastation.

Happy Halloween

I have some pictures and video to post of Hurricane Sandy of course, but I want to wish everyone a Happy Halloween. I will of course have pictures of Bella's third Halloween too! We all survived the storm and obviously now have power and internet back! YES!!! Power returned at 8pm last night and cable/internet returned around 11 am this morning. Aside from making life more enjoyable, I use my computer and internet for work purposes and do not have Excel on my iPhone or iPad, although I was considering purchasing the app if we were without power or internet for much longer. Narragansett's Coast Guard House restaurant took a direct hit with the storm and will need to be demolished and rebuilt. The road is to remain closed until the demolition is complete. No big deal except that our Post Office is across the street! And Christmas shopping, cards/package shipping and receiving is upon us! Not sure how that will work out just yet. Mail is still kind of a priority for people, even in our internet age. Although, I won't mind a bill or two getting "lost". I do get some mail delivered to our street address and get most of my deliveries here at home, but shipping is done at the post office. Our big intersection lights are still not working. It's taken them two days to put stop signs up and making it a four way stop. I think the police assumed people would know when the lights stop working, it naturally becomes a four way stop. Well people are stupid around here, so no assumptions of intelligence and common sense usage should ever be made. I'm all for thinning the herd though, so kudos to the cops for almost letting that happen. I have given my children permission to just punch me if they ever hear me complain of having too many traffic signals in town. All in all, the town could be in worse shape. Our end of town (Point Judith area) is literally surrounded by water on three sides, hence the name Point Judith, so it certainly could have been obliterated. I looked out on how calm the ocean was today and I looked out upon it when it was angrily roaring and threatening to consume everything in its path the last three days and it is never to be underestimated. As a former lifeguard, one is taught just that, but to stand there and just watch the power, it is amazing and frightening and breathtaking. I love our little town and I'm so glad it was spared again! Three hurricanes for me in the almost 6 years we've lived here. Survived the One Hundred Year flood too that nailed Warwick.

Blech! My relaxing week and weekend is coming to a close. Back to work at both jobs tomorrow. 52 1/2 hours on board plus a mess of a storm to factor in. The good news is that if school gets canceled because of bad weather or more likely, widespread power outages, then no workie for me! Except I'm supposed to do the overnight Monday night into Tuesday morning, which is when the storm is actually supposed to reach us, but my boss just texted and said she'd do my overnight! :) So I guess at school tomorrow, I will get a better feel about whether or not school will likely be canceled Tuesday. I wish they would just go ahead and cancel it preemptively so people can focus on their own situations for the duration of the storm. It's not the storm as much as lack of power at my house that has me concerned. Getting ready for work with no lights or hot water will be interesting to say the least. I had a really good day yesterday with my husband and Bella. It was so warm and we spent some time at the beach. Last night we had a fire outside and some drinks. We're just trying to enjoy "normal" for as long as possible. Our personal electronic devices are charged or charging. My Kindle is still loaded with books I'm reading. I have extra batteries for my reading light in case we do lose power. I will take a nice bath and shave my legs and enjoy hot water while I still can. We have plenty of board games to keep us busy. I guess we will just stock up on some snack foods and drinks. At least I have Wednesday off to recharge MYSELF! I'm sure I will need it! Attitude is everything so I guess I had better get my mindset in a more positive space. Time to clean and prepare.

10/26/12

So I had the week off from one job which means I only worked 37 hours this week. I am feeling pretty good about it. I think I would have gone crazy having worked zero hours. I don't even know how people take real vacations if they are just going to stay home. What do you do without getting sloth-like and depressed??? Of course, if it were summer, I'm sure I'd find plenty to do here at home such as spend every waking moment at the beach. Speaking of the beach, I went there this early morning because I caught a glimpse of the sun as it was rising and knew I needed to be there. It was so warm and peaceful there this morning. The antithesis of what's coming around here Sunday through Tuesday-ish...they still haven't narrowed the storm down completely yet but it will likely hit us here in Rhode Island on Monday. It still may high tail it out to sea but all data is pointing to negative on that hope. I am not one to overreact or even over prepare for storms around here, having grown up in Maine where there are real storms and real snow and real threats to lives...but there's just this feeling I'm getting that we may be in for a ride with this one, so I'm going to load up on some snack foods and do some baking Saturday and Sunday to get us through. We have the grill with burners, so I'm not worried about our water supply. The roads flood around here during a regular rain storm, so I'm definitely expecting some washouts. The Tahoe is high enough and has 4 wheel drive and seats 7 comfortably, and we're high enough up the hill that our house won't flood. Our back yard however, yep, she'll get wet! Worst case scenario...we sleep on the boat! :)

10/22/12

I am having a Monday. The weekends fly by way too fast. This first cup of coffee has really done nothing for my mood. I just want some time to have a full-on mental breakdown. I think it's just the impending time change weirdness. My brain and body knows it's coming. I get this way around the same time in the Spring. I just want to be a bear. A hibernating bear. Who can read and hibernates in a library. The good news is soccer season is almost over and I get my husband back. The holidays are coming up too and that makes me happy. I guess I am going to work on my closet today. I'm feeling the urge to purge.

What a nice weekend! It was laid back. Hayley and I went shopping Friday night and to the late movie. We saw Paranormal Activity 4. It was ok. Not terribly scary but I enjoyed the story. I miss my husband terribly when he's away but I can't lie, I LOVED having the bed to myself! Saturday was kind of a waste as I did nothing but watch movies. Today however, I made up for it! I cleaned and scrubbed and washed and mopped! The house is looking and smelling delicious! Bella played in the leaves for a bit. I make seasoned chicken, smashed potatoes, and very yummy sautéed Brussels sprouts with garlic, bacon and asiago cheese.
